In what seems like a sign of the times, the only people who visit this park are old pensioners trying to get out of the house for a few hours. They sit in the pavilion and play cards and Korean chess, sleep, and talk to others. Younger Koreans have absolutely NO concept of history or what the older generation endured to provide them with a terrible fashion sense and bags full of tecnohype gadgets. Not to mention to give them the right to say what they think....which is often vaccuous nonsense.

I am very disppointed that after 2 years - excuse me,
I mean 1 year and 10 months - at Dongseo I have to
leave with such a bitter feeling.

I see my mistakes now; my mistake was trusting
information from ***-*** and you. If it makes you feel
better, you may choose to remember the incident
differently, as you did on the phone today. However, I
very clearly recall the TA asking you if the school
would pay for half of a round trip ticket instead of a
one-way ticket, and you replying yes, the school will
pay half. That was what you said.

This, of course, was immediately after the TA
informed me that the school would buy me a ticket,
which we now know was wrong, and which is the reason I
must now pay 150,000 won to cancel a ticket that I
can't afford without the school's contribution.

Instead of doing the honorable thing and acknowledging
the TA's mistakes and your unwitting corroboration of
her mistake, you turn and point the finger at me,
saying how shocking it is that I wouldn't disregard
the word of 2 people (one of whom is my boss), run
home, check my contract, and discover that you were
both wrong. You are shocked that I wouldn't know that
"4 semesters", in the eyes of the sleazy,
exploitative, penny-pinching accounting office, does
not equal "2 years", and that they would use this
10-month contract issue to cheat another foreign
employee out of some benefits (as they did to Michael
Curtis, and will no doubt do to other foreigners in
the future).

I can tell you that this shocks me too.

It shocks me that even though the school has changed
the 10-month contract, I will be screwed now because I
fall 2 months short of 2 calendar years.

It shocks me that my boss would lie to me and deny
ever confirming the wrong information to me.

It shocks me that not only were (the TA) and you
unwilling to acknowledge your mistakes, but that you
wouldn't even offer me a simple APOLOGY for giving me
such costly and erroneous information. An apology
would have been classy. (Note: the TA did apologize without
prompting shortly after this email was written.
John wrote, and published, his apology to her.)
Instead, I get finger pointing, denials, and lies. And
that, sadly, is how I will remember Dongseo.

I know you are worried that I will run out and leave
my contract unfulfilled. I can assure you I will not
do that. I will honor my contract, even though my
contract was designed to screw me, a foreigner, out of
benefits. I do not intend to go the labor board, or
write a letter to someone higher up, and stir trouble
in any such way. That would be pointless.

Dong-seo fancies itself a top-ten, world-class school.
This is simple propaganda, which nobody except
President Park pretends to believe. It also fancies
itself a "Christian" university, which, in light of
recent events, strikes me as a particularly cruel
irony. But whatever the words Dongseo chooses to
flatter itself, I can tell you that among the
foreigners living and working in Busan, Dongseo's
reputation is quite different.

I used to defend Dongseo against the people who said
it was a dodgy place to work. My opinion, however, has
changed, and I can even say I feel betrayed and
ashamed to have ever defended it. Because of the shady
accounting tricks, the incompetence, the evasion of
responsibilty and the lies I have encountered, I no
longer believe that Dong-seo is an even remotely
respectable institution. As this disgraceful incident
has unfolded, Dongseo has revealed its character to
me, and sadly, it has shown itself to be greedy,
dishonest, and incompetent, and I intend to say as
much to anyone who asks.

Be apprised that my conscience compels me to copy this
letter to the foreign staff, which I have done, so
that they may be warned against similar shaftings (I like how
John coins a new word here) in the future.

Monday was Parent's Day in Korea. Sadly, Jaymi and I were both busy so we didn't get to spend it with the family. Sooooo we took them out tonight. Same building with a little different view...I am pretty sure that this is the Hotel Ukarina. That has to smart...Ukraine used to be part of the USSR. Now it and the Russian Federation are at odds and sniping at each other. Yet, here in the middle of Moscow is a giant hotel/landmark named after them. That would be like having the Hotel Cuba as one of Washington, DC's biggest buildings...heheheheh stupid.

With the heightened security threat and elevated terror alert, the
government has issued new warnings addressing possible forms of
national disaster. Included in the list are: dirty bombings (especially
on subways and buses), assaults on national financial centers, and a
zombie apocalypse. However, in light of the last warning, Government
Zombie Expert, Gump Hood, has responded with outrage. He has called it
"blatantly irresponsible and unforgivably simplistic" to stir up terror
without also providing some means of coping with the situation. What
follows is a set of precise instructions for dealing with this crisis
based on Hood’s years of experience in the field.

What will you do in the event of a zombie apocalypse? This is serious
business; zombies will kill you. They are dead. They want you dead. You
need to have some idea how to overcome this problem. I am here to help.
First, you need to know that not everyone dies when Zombies attack, but
everyone dead becomes a zombie. Hence, unless you want to be a zombie,
you have to stay alive. There are a few stages to this type of
apocalypse. I will now list them, and the tips for surviving a zombie
attack.

Phase 1 The First Zombie

For some reason, you will never encounter eight zombies your first
time. There will be only one. You will be getting the mail and
bang...zombie coming at you. What do you do?

Step 1: Do not try to fight the zombie. He’s gonna beat you.
Go inside and shut the door and get help.

Step 2: Don’t stand near a window. Zombies love windows.

Step 3: Get a weapon. A kitchen knife isn’t going to do it. I am
talking a weapon. A katana is good, but a shotgun is better. A long
object to poke the zombie is key. Think distance. Don’t get up in the
zombie’s grill.

Step 4: Take out the first zombie by immobilizing him. Remember, a
zombie that can’t walk isn’t nearly as dangerous. This isn’t
to say he’s going to stop coming, he’s just not nearly as tough
to take out.

Step 5: You are going to need to find a base in which to hold up. Make
sure you get a good mix of girls and guys together. This is going to be
a long apocalypse. If you have only guys looking down the barrel of an
apocalypse, you are going to have a sausage fest. Nobody likes a
sausage fest.

Phase 2 Supplies & Barricades

It's a zombie apocalypse. The clock is ticking. Don’t worry how Zombie
#1 found you...the rest are on their way. This is the most important
phase to survival.

Step 1: Assess your base. You need to know your choke points and where
zombies are coming in. For example, in my house, we give the zombies
the basement. We might barricade the first floor, if there is time, but
the second floor is our primary defensive line, and the third floor is
our last stand.

Step 2: Break off into teams. Three teams.
Team one is for securing the house. Get someone smart to do this. A
flighty person will forget to secure the attic. This team goes to Home
Depot, buys lots of wood and nails. They take out all entrances. Here
is the most important step: TAKE UP THE FLOORBOARDS ON THE STAIRS.
Zombies can’t climb, you can - don’t give them a walkway to walk up.
Team two is on weapons. Make a list, go and get them. Remember, FIRE IS
NOT YOUR FRIEND. Lighting a zombie on fire only leaves you with a
zombie on fire. They will burn you alive in your house. To my
knowledge, no zombie has ever been able to use fire without the help of
a stupid human. You want weapons that you can use: Chainsaws, shotguns,
rifles, pistols, hand grenades (be careful!), dynamite, etc. The bigger
the better. Blunt swinging weapons and small stabbing weapons aren’t
gonna cut it. You can’t just STAB a zombie. Buy more weapons than you
need.
Team three is on food. Remember, the zombies will probably kill the
electric and water company people. Though the water will still be on
for a while, the electricity probably will not. You might get lucky and
they will leave the power on, but zombie apocalypses tend to knock out
power by accident. Anyway, get food. Not meat. Dried, canned food,
things that last forever. You will probably die of hunger or thirst if
you secure your house right, so food is a priority.

Step 3: Game plan. Make sure everyone is on the same page, make sure
you know your exits. Figure out who is going to go crazy. If someone
freaks out - two words: Zombie chow. Level heads, people. Don’t panic.
Make sure you have a good escape route if things go wrong and a way to
get to an escape vehicle. Have it loaded with supplies. Hide weapons at
fall back positions. You will lose your weapon. Have a backup.

Step 4: Look to your left and right. These people will probably die.
This is a zombie attack. Things go wrong. Accept it.

Step 5: Make sure your team is in whole hog. No one goes to their
parents’ or to their boyfriend’s. No one oversleeps. And no one,
absolutely no one tries to reason with a zombie. Everyone else is dead.
The government isn’t coming; the military might be alive, but they
aren’t coming to your house for a long time. It’s just you and your
companions. I recommend the buddy system. If you are alone - you will
die.

Phase 3 The attack

This is the part where the zombies try to kill you, and it’s time to
see if your prep work paid off. Did your zombie pit work? Or did it
backfire? This is when you find out...the hard way.

Step 1: Don’t be a hero. It doesn’t matter if you kill 20
zombies...there are 4,000 more outside. Kill only those zombies that
are an immediate threat. This doesn’t mean that you shoot one that’s
looking at you funny. It means shoot the one that learned how to climb
(it’s rare but can happen).

Step 2: Save ammo. You are basically living by putting yourself in a
cage. This is it. If you want to die, kill yourself. If not, always
remember that you are doing this everyday for the rest of your life. If
you want that to be a long time then save your ammo.

Step 3: Save food. You must accept hunger. Ration yourself. If anyone
is eating more than their share, you might want to try and kill them.
They are as dangerous as a zombie.

Step 4: If the zombies break through your first line of defense, and
they have you in a corner, you are probably going to die. Avoid this by
preventing them from ever being able to get to you. Don’t worry about
getting out. It’s not like you are going to go see a movie. Zombies are
at the movies now.

Step 5: Zombies have three main weaknesses:
I. Zombies are dumb. They can’t open doors. They don’t solve problems.
They will fall for the same trick a million times in a row.
II. Zombies don’t have goals. They just want to get you. If you don’t
give them a way to get you, they won’t. They will just moan about it
all day.
III. A zombie without a head will die. Remember this.

Step 6: Zombies have five main strengths:
I. They don’t really care about danger.
II. They can still function with most body parts missing.
III. They are durable and can take hits. Only large slicing or
explosive weapons will really stop them for sure.
IV. They have all the time in the world.

Phase 4 Survival

Step 1: Once the zombies are at bay (if you got this far) you must make
sure to maintain your barricades, and stay on zombie alert. If you kill
too many, and the bodies stack up, they can use that to get to you. A
canyon may seem like a good idea, but eventually they will fill the
canyon with bodies to climb and walk on.

Step 2: Food. Like I said before, this will be your worst enemy. Eat
sparingly.

Step 3: Boredom. I hope you bought cards, because life is going to be
pretty boring until you die. It’s you, your buddies and zombies. There
is only so long you can talk about zombies.

Step 4: Don’t leave the house: you will die. If someone starts to go
crazy; kill them. If someone eats too much; kill them. This is lord of
the flies on Zombie Island. You gotta play for keeps or it’s curtains
for you. But remember: Make sure you AGREE to kill someone, if you just
start shooting, you will be the next to go.

Step 5: At a certain point the zombies will reveal a weakness, and you
must exploit it to destroy them all. It could be that they melt in
salt, or that they are scared of cats. Whatever it is, use it.

Phase 5 The Aftermath

Give yourself a big hug. You’ve just survived a Zombie apocalypse. This
is when only a few of you are left. Now you get to loot all the stores,
move into a nice house and have lots of sex.

Step 1: Loot all stores.

Step 3: Have lots of sex.
